About My Ears Are Open

I started producing the My Ears Are Open podcast in January 2009. The idea was simple: from the performers perspective, what lessons can composers learn from the musicians who are our biggest advocates, and how can we make these relationships stronger?

Every two weeks you can expect to hear new stories from the people who have devoted their lives to performing contemporary music. I ask them about working with composers, if they have any advice for us, and what they have been listening to that they are excited about.

Now, with the addition of this new site, I will be able to bring more content to you and make it easier for you to be part of the conversation. Please be in touch if you have any ideas for the podcast or the blog.

I hope that you find this to be a valuable resource.

About James Holt

My name is James Holt, and I am a composer who primarily writes music for mixed chamber ensembles.

The Verdehr Trio, Tonus Percussion Group, Tosca String Quartet, Attacca Percussion Group, Sqwonk, REDSHIFT, Composer’s Concordance, Forecast Music, violinist Ben Sung, clarinetist Jorge Montilla, and choreographer Laura Poole, have all performed or commissioned new works from me. My music has been heard across the United States and in England, including recent and upcoming performances in New York City, Boston, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Alaska.

I was a Fellow at both the Aspen Music Festival and School and the Bang on a Can Summer Institute of Music, have taken creative residencies at Yaddo and Centrum, and taught as an Associate Instructor of Composition at Indiana University, where I was also Assistant Director of the IU New Music Ensemble.

I’m originally from Seattle and now I live and work in New York City.
