Passacaglia (2005)

[bcl, vc, elec. gtr, elec. bass, pno, perc]
Timing: 7’30”

Program note:
Passacaglia was written for the Bang on a Can Summer Institute 2005, and is centered on a 14-measure passacaglia theme that is first presented several times in the piano before being taken up by the vibraphone, and eventually the electric guitar.  Working in and around this dialogue, the ensemble provides texture and colors subtly changing the perspective and character of the ever-present theme.  Repetitions of the passacaglia create a ceremonial, ritualistic effect reminiscent of gamelan music, suggesting contemplation of ideas, people and places.  Passacaglia is scored for bass clarinet, cello, electric guitar, electric bass, piano and percussion.
